Updated February 2023

Everything you need to help YOU with your wedding vision and planning.

The reception aspect of your wedding is a personal and unique celebration that should reflect your preferences and priorities. Whether it's your first dance, cake cutting, dancing, or simply enjoying the company of your friends and family, each element of the reception holds its own significance. As your photographer, I recommend determining whether you desire complete coverage of the reception or if you would prefer for me to stay until the dance floor gets lively. This way, we can ensure that your memories of the reception are captured in a way that is meaningful to you.

Reception - APPROX 2 to 5 hours

Time to mingle with all your friends and family! If you have chosen to do all your portraits (couple, wedding party & family) beforehand then you are all set to relax and enjoy. If you have opted to wait and do all your portraits afterwards I recommend an extended cocktail hour or a break between your ceremony and reception so you don't feel rushed and can get the quality portraits you've hired us to create.

Cocktail hour itself is a simple. We document a series of candids mixed with portraits of your friends and family. Don't hesitate to ask for a photo or provide us with a brief list of groups you may want like your college or high school friends or an extended family group.

Cocktail Hour - APPROX 60-90 Minutes

Here are Artists & Stories we love documenting your families. We love to get a mixed of formal portraits and documentary related photos of you together. Family portrait sessions are typically held 1 hour prior to the ceremony or immediately following the ceremony at the venue or church. We suggest selecting 10-15 different groupings as each shot takes approximately 2-3 minutes to set-up.

If we will be doing your family portraits at a church, please keep in mind the time allotted by the church for your ceremony and portraits.

Family Portraits - APPROX 15-30 MINUTES

We recommend keeping your wedding party portraits to a minimum, especially if you are on a tight timeline. However, if you are looking for a variety of different groupings and locations, you should plan accordingly. Photos with multiple people take 2-3 minutes or longer per grouping to complete.

Wedding Party Portraits - APPROX 30 MINUTES

When planning your wedding photography timeline, it's important to consider the number of locations you wish to have portraits at. Ideally, allow around 30 minutes per location in addition to travel time. While some couples prefer to minimize their personal portraits and spend more time with friends and family during the post-ceremony cocktail hour, others opt to do the private portrait session before the ceremony, so they can enjoy the entire cocktail hour with their guests without interruption. It's essential to find a balance that works best for you and your partner while also considering your guests' experience and your vision for your portraits.

Don't forget about scheduling time for "golden hour" or "sunset" portraits. We recommend taking 15 minutes to spend the time with each other and capture the lighting we all love so much.

Couple Portraits - APPROX 30-60 MINUTES

The length of your ceremony can vary depending on your preferences. A shorter, more intimate ceremony may last around 15 minutes, while a traditional church service may be closer to 60 minutes or more. Regardless of the length of your ceremony, it's essential to allow enough time for post-ceremony greetings with guests if you are choosing to greet them after, which typically takes around 30 minutes, unless you have other plans for a quick exit.

Please keep in mind any church time restrictions.

ceremony -  APPROX 30-60 MINUTES

Seeing each other for the first time is such a special and exciting thing. You can take as much time and as little time as you want together and even have a little portrait session in your first look location. You can opt to have a private first look with just you both and your creative team or you can choose to have whoever you want there. We always vote private so you can have a moment just the two of you.

First Look - approx 15-30 minutes

As a wedding photographer, we will arrive at the bride's preparation location once she is close to finishing her hair and makeup. This will allow us to capture the final touches and the finishing look. Additionally, it is important to have any meaningful items such as stationery, jewelry, flowers, or family heirlooms gathered together for me to photograph when I first arrive. This will ensure that we document all the special details that you've included on your special day.

GETTING READY: BRIDE PREP - APPROX 1 - 2 HOURS

We all know the guys don't take long but they are still important part of the story. We love to document the hanging out, the quiet moments, the details to the getting ready. Some grooms prefer not to be photographed during this part of the day for location reasons or otherwise. Please feel free to do whatever feels best for you but remember they may be a missing element from your wedding story.

GETTING READY: GROOM PREP - APPROX 30-60 MINutes

A carefully crafted wedding day timeline for your wedding day can serve as a roadmap for your planning and help ensure that every special moment is captured flawlessly. When developing your timeline, be sure to include these essential events and allocate the appropriate amount of time for photography. Remember, we tell stories and your timeline drives where your wedding day story begins.

We are here to help guide you through creating your perfect wedding photography timeline. Should you not be able to craft one on your own, please reach out to us so we can provide you additional guidance and schedule your creative consultation.

Choosing the perfect location for your wedding can be a daunting task, but it's essential to remember that the location should reflect your personal style and character. It should also be a reflection of your wedding vision. Your getting ready location sets the scene for your wedding story.

Consider renting an Airbnb/VRBO, getting ready in your own home or a family home for a more intimate and personal touch (our personal favorite). Consider a timeless or modern hotel room with great aesthetic, furniture instead of a dated hotel room or a conference room. If you are using your venues bridal suite consider the style and light. Many bridal/wedding suites don't have natural light and can also feel stuffy or not a similar style to your vision.

Lighting is also an important factor, ensure that the location you choose has good natural light or the option to add additional lighting. Big windows are so dreamy! Check out our lighting section and guide for more information on lighting on your wedding day.

Getting Ready Locations

Some of our favorite getting ready locations

KEEP THE ROOM CLEAN AND ORGANIZED. have wedding party finish getting ready in their own locations, if not possible, keep all items in one section. A messy room is not something we can hide.

Use champagne glasses or nicer glasses for drinks - we suggest no plastic cups

Ask your florist for styling blooms or provide a few items for your detail photos

Select a getting ready location with several windows for better light

Consider a getting ready location with multiple rooms so hair & Make up can be in one room & wedding prep can be in another. This is especially important if you have several people getting ready with you.

Choose only a few people to join you when you put on your attire

GATHER ALL YOUR ITEMS TOGETHER IN A BOX OR BAG SO WE CAN EASILY START STYLING EVERYTHING WHEN WE ARRIVE

Allot the proper amount of time - Unsure what that might be for you? Let's talk.

What we recommend:

The getting ready portion of a wedding story are some of our favorites to document. There is so much excitement and anticipation as you share those final hours before the big event with your friends & family. It's true, the "getting ready" portion of your day sets the tone for your wedding day and its photographic journey. We drafted the following tips based on situations we commonly encounter and promise that if you follow them, we’ll be better set up to capture the best quality photos during this portion of your day.

Ideas: Pack command strips in case there is nowhere to hang your dress in the hotel. Confetti, dried flowers, and sentimental items all make great additions to your "flat lay" photos.

Our "MUST" Getting Ready Tips

Any details not listed you want photographed.

Items to have ready:

Details are a great way to set the scene and start your wedding story. These photos may not be the top on your photography must list but we do feel they are important piece to telling your story. Please have these items together in one place for when we arrive to each location. If you are getting ready at separate locations, please keep ALL rings together which includes engagement rings and all bands. Consider providing extra stying blooms from your florist or personal details you want photographed with your wedding details.

Details Checklist

Be your own kind of beautiful.

Thinking about the traditional route? No worries! We understand and we got you. When a couple chooses not to do a "first look" before the ceremony, it changes the flow of the wedding photography timeline. Instead of capturing the intimate moment when the couple sees each other for the first time privately before the ceremony, we will photograph the couple's reaction as they see each other for the first time when they walk down the aisle. This means that the couple's formal portrait session will take place after the ceremony, which can make for a more hectic and tight post-ceremony schedule. It also means that the couple will not have as much time for portraits before the reception, as they may need to take care of other post-ceremony responsibilities such as greeting guests and signing the marriage license. Some couples may prefer this traditional approach, but it's important to consider the timing and logistics of your wedding day when making this decision.

Additionally, we also suggest considering your personalities and emotions. While we understand why couples choose the traditional route we often see very different reactions. At a ceremony, you are in front of your guests unlike during your first look. If you think you may hold back your emotions or be to nervous prior to the ceremony I would just considering alternative options.

No First Look

We could go on for hours about why a first look makes a timeline more convenient. We leave this decision up to our couples because every wedding story is different. While on may work for one couple, another may not for the next.

For many, the first look is a special and intimate moment that allows the couple to see each other in private before the ceremony. This moment can be incredibly emotional and sentimental, as the couple can take in the gravity of the occasion without the pressure of the ceremony or guests. It also allows the couple to have a private and intimate moment together before they are surrounded by friends and family. Additionally, doing a first look allows the couple to have the majority of their photos beforehand like the wedding party, their family and of cource, photos of them before the ceremony, which can save time and reduce stress on the wedding day. Some couples it relieves nerves and allows them to exchange private vows or letters to each other. It also means that the couple has more time to spend with their guests during the cocktail hour and reception. This special moment is something that will be cherished for a lifetime, and it's a great opportunity for the couple to take a step back and appreciate each other before the whirlwind of the wedding day begins.

When doing a first look, we always suggest taking a quiet 10-15 minutes at sunset or later in the night to take some intimate or fun "we're married" photos.

First Look vs. No First Look

Having your wedding ceremony at a church? No worries! Churches make for stunning backdrops for weddings! Did you now many churches don't allow photographers not on their list or have rules? To set us up for success for your ceremony, please check with your church for any rules & restrictions pertaining to photography. It's important that you are aware of these restrictions as they can interfere with how your wedding is documented. Please pass any rules & restrictions to us.

Ceremony Tips & Church Ceremonies

An unplugged ceremony is a wedding ceremony where guests are asked to put away their phones and cameras during the ceremony. We could tell you many reasons why you should have an unplugged ceremony. Firstly, it allows guests to be present in the moment and fully engage with the ceremony. Instead of being focused on capturing the perfect photo or video, guests can focus on the love and commitment being shared by the couple. Secondly, it allows the couple to have a more intimate and meaningful ceremony, free from distractions and interruptions. Lastly, it ensures that professional photographers and videographers can capture the best shots without interference from guests, resulting in beautiful and timeless memories for the couple to treasure for a lifetime.

THE UNPLUGGED CEREMONY

CEREMONIES

Let's talk all about

Can your portrait location or venue double as a rain or snow plan?

Do you have any locations that are sentimental to you?

Do you want a nature setting (trees, water, etc) or Would you prefer an urban setting with buildings, streets, indoors?

Consider the lighting with the time of day. Is there shade?

Consider these questions:

When deciding on the perfect location for your wedding photography, it's important to consider both the aesthetic and practical aspects. First, determine whether you prefer a natural background such as trees, water, or a more urban setting like buildings, streets, and sidewalks. Keep in mind the location of your wedding when making this decision. If there's travel required between the ceremony and reception, consider what's in close proximity to each location and whether there are sites in those areas that you like. This will allow us to minimize the time spent traveling. Additionally, talk to us about permits. Some locations may require them and some locations may host events so it's important to make sure no additional events are being used or set-up at the time of our portrait session.

Here’s a list of family photo combinations to keep in mind for the family portraits. We recommend keeping the number of combinations to ten or less depending on importance and time allotted. Every family is unique and requires different groupings, these are just suggestions to help guide you. Please allow 2-3 minutes for each combination and allot the correct amount of time for family portraits. Typically 30 minutes.

Before the big day, we recommend asking family members what portraits are important to them. In our wedding day questionnaire we ask if there are any unique family dynamics we should be aware of. This will help ensure that the portrait process is as smooth and stress-free as possible. Please let us know any details in advance.

Here is a list of the most common combinations.

Both Families Together

If family photos is happening AFTER the ceremony, tell those in photos to stay behind or head to the area we will be doing photos. Having them head to cocktail hour only takes up time finding them.

Designate a family member from each side of the family to gather everyone for pictures and help call off names.

Think of some stories or jokes for your family photos. We love the posed formals but catching some authentic laughs are always a beautiful thing.

Do all family portraits prior to the ceremony and be able to enjoy cocktail hour with all your friends and family. No worries though, we can sneak a few extended family photos after so everyone doesn't see you before your big moment!

We typically start with the large, extended family groups first, allowing all but the immediate family to leave for the cocktail hour. Then onto grandparents so they can finish before getting overly tired.

Here are our best tips:

We want your family portrait time to run as smoothly as possible because we know that family portraits can be one of the most chaotic and stressful times on a wedding day. It is our hope that these tips will help you prepare for this part of your day and we can document all those fun candid moments.

"A reception is like a symphony, it's a beautiful harmony of love, laughter, and good food."

Reception

Receptions are a lot of fun. They can range from a fancy dinner party to a full on rave. We've seen both. We want you to have the best possible celebration for your marriage.

• Confetti drop • Disco balls • Late night food - but make it fun • Ice cream cart • Props for dancing

Some ideas to add to your reception and make it more photographic:

Reception

A mock exit, also known as a "fake send-off" or "staged exit" is a popular trend in wedding photography where the couple stages their exit from the reception before the actual end of the night. This allows the couple to have beautiful and romantic photos of them leaving the reception, without having to rush away from their guests. The mock exit can take place during the reception, usually after the first dance and before the guests start dancing. The couple can leave the reception, take a few photos, and then return to the reception to continue to enjoy the night with their guests. This gives the photographer enough time to capture the couple in different settings and poses, without being rushed. The couple can also use this opportunity to change into different clothes, if desired. It's important to note that a mock exit should be discussed with the wedding planner, venue, and other vendors to ensure that there are no conflicts with the timing and logistics of the reception. Also, make sure to inform your guests that this is not the actual exit and that you'll be back soon to keep enjoying the night with them.

We've been photographing weddings for a while so it makes sense that we have embedded in our heads an automatic list of photos we take simply because they are an expectation. While no photo is guaranteed on a wedding day due to the fast paced nature of wedding photography, we like to be able to provide you with something that ensures you don't need to make a list to include these things.

Should you feel inclined to make a must have photo list, please note that we do not reference the list during your wedding. We do review and take account of what you have included. We focus on the documentary aspect of the wedding day and include these photos when possible.

Sage Advice

Blue hour, the time just before sunrise and just after sunset, can provide a stunning and unique setting for photography. The soft blue light creates a dreamy and romantic atmosphere, and the low angle of the sun provides an opportunity for capturing beautiful and dramatic shadows. This time can also provide a unique and dramatic contrast between the blue tones in the sky and the warm tones of the lighting on the subjects. It's a perfect time for capturing intimate and timeless images of you, as well as creative and artistic shots. Blue hour is a truly special time taking moody wedding photos and a must time to photograph.

Blue Hour

Golden hour, the hour just before sunset and just after sunrise, is a beloved time for photographers. The warm, soft light casts a beautiful golden glow on the landscape and subjects, creating a serene and romantic atmosphere. The low angle of the sun during this time also provides a unique opportunity for capturing striking shadows and textures. Golden hour is a magical time to capture stunning images and one of our absolute favorite times of day. We highly suggest scheduling your portraits around this time. If you can't then we recommend at least stepping out for 10-15 minutes to get that incredible light.

"When it rains look for rainbows. When it’s dark look for stars."

If your wedding is in the late fall or winter we have to consider that it may be too cold or we could be hit with a snowstorm. While I encourage taking photos in the snow when the temperature is right, I do recommend having a plan B option. Consider a conservatory, brewery, your hotel or even your home.

Snow Plan

Our favorite motto for rain is "embrace the rain". But we understand the circumstances for why not every couple likes that idea. From a photographer's perspective, having a rain plan for portraits on a wedding day is important because it ensures that you will still get beautiful, high-quality photos even if the weather doesn't cooperate. Rain can create a romantic and moody atmosphere, and having a plan in place means that we can take advantage of those conditions to capture stunning images. Additionally, it's important for the couple to be prepared for the possibility of rain, as it can be disappointing if they don't have any backup options. Having a rain plan in place also allows the photographer to have more creative freedom and flexibility, since they can work with the couple to create unique and memorable images that reflect the couple's personalities and the theme of the wedding.

Physical photographs have an undeniable charm that digital images cannot replicate. They offer a tangible connection to a specific moment in time, a place and a feeling. While digital files are beautiful, they are not quite the same as holding a print or custom album in your hands. These are heirlooms that can be passed down for generations, providing a lasting connection to your wedding day that will be cherished for years to come.

When it comes to your photographs, you will receive them in an online gallery where you will find many beautifully curated products available for purchase. These products will allow you to preserve your memories in a way that feels special and meaningful to you and your family. Products range from framed prints, fine art albums, canvas prints, keepsake boxes and more.

Every story deserves to be told in print so here are some incredible ways to make that happen!

We are committed to providing our clients with high-quality prints that will last a lifetime. We offer a variety of print sizes to fit any space and decor. We also provide framing services to ensure that your prints are ready to hang and display as soon as you receive them. We also offer canvas prints, which can be an excellent way to showcase your favorite photos. We offer three types of paper finish: matte, pearl, and fine art, so you can choose the one that best fits your taste and your photos. These high-quality prints are printed with archival inks and papers to ensure they will not fade or yellow over time. You can be sure that the memories you have captured on your special day will remain vibrant and beautiful for many years to come.

Prints

At Artists & Stories, we believe that a high-quality wedding album should be a luxurious keepsake that captures the essence of your special day. That's why we offer a variety of album options to suit every couple's taste. Our albums come in a range of colors and textures, including lay-flat albums, fine art albums, and books. The cover textures are available in printed, leather, faux linen, leather, suede, and velvet. We also offer options for both thick and thin pages, and all of our albums are printed on smooth semi- matte paper, ensuring that they are durable and built to last. Our albums are crafted with the use of archival materials and pages carefully mounted to create thick lay-flat spreads, which guarantees that these albums will be cherished for a lifetime. Each album features a minimum of 20 pages and a maximum of 50 pages and the Fine Art albums are offered wrapped. These albums are not just photo albums, they're a legacy of your special day that is meant to be shared for generations.

Together is a beautiful place to be.

Videographers on our list are vendors we work with and work well together. If you are thinking about hiring a different videographer, please reach out to us. Please keep in mind when hiring a videographer, we cannot control their narrative, positioning and more. While we will do our best to work with them we can't control if they end up in some our photographs. We suggest asking them how they document portraits. If they require their own time to create actions then you will need to allot a time with them on your timeline in addition to ours or consider what is more important to you. We find that it is very difficult to work with videographers during portrait time because there becomes too many cooks in the kitchen and this can effect the creative process. Feel free to reach out to us if you have questions or concerns.

When choosing a videographer to document your wedding story, it's important to find someone whose artistic style aligns with ours as photographers. We strive to capture candid and authentic moments, and having a videographer with a similar approach ensures that our work complements and enhances each other's storytelling. We recommend considering a documentary-style videographer who specializes in understated storytelling and minimal directing as it would work best with our approach. Together, we will create a beautiful and artistic wedding story that captures all the authentic emotions and memories of your story.

All you need to know about picking the right videographer:

Our couples (engagement) sessions are so much more than looking nice for the camera. We like to think we have a different approach than putting on nice clothes to do the same things likely many of your friends and family have done. Our couples session are meant to be a story and show who YOU are together and as individuals. They're a time for you to dress like yourself, plan a date together and document that date. It could be to your favorite bar, taking a hike through your favorite city park, swimming in the lake, a beach day, or simply just hanging out at home. Sessions should always have a vision and be apart of your story.

To us they're absolutely worth it.  You get to know us behind the camera and we get to know you. But beyond that, you get photos that really speak to who you are and are not just from your wedding day. Storytelling is so important in life and being able to tell that in photographs is so much more meaningful.

To us a couples session is a date with a purpose. creating a memory.

Timeless, fun, uniquely you.

The Couples Session

Love has many chapters & you're more than just your wedding day. Nothing screams you more than photos that are you.

Just somethings that we think adds a little something extra to a wedding day or engagement session

Real talk from real clients

I can’t even begin to say how spectacular Megan’s work is. She puts so much love into her craft and creates stunning photo stories for a variety of occasions. She is a great location scout and goes above and beyond to get unique and beautiful shots. My husband and I got married at the Salish Lodge at Snoqualmie Falls in Washington. We are huge Twin Peaks fans and live nearby. Megan came out to photograph our wedding and was an absolute dream to work with. We get so many compliments on how epic our photos are! If you want top quality and thoughtful work, go to Megan! She truly loves her craft and it shows.

Megan Saul was so fun to work with. She’s creative, daring, and organized. She basically acted as another day of planner and helped me make my entire day of timeline. Our wedding photos turned out absolutely beautiful and perfect. I still look back at them frequently even though the wedding was half a year ago.

Megan Saul is an incredible photographer. Fate truly brought us together and I knew she would understand our vibe immediately! She captured so many wonderful moments of our day, put our unique spin on our photos, and I laugh every time I look back at our moody photo booth pictures! She was truly more than a photographer to us but a friend through the whole experience. I couldn't recommend her enough!
